A brief history of bay window shutters

Bay windows date back to the mansions of the early English Renaissance era (15th century through to the 17th). Throughout history, window shutters have played a vital feature in many historic homes and properties, right back to medieval times when glass was very expensive and wooden shutters were used to protect residents from the elements and add a basic level of protection from intruders. Today, plantation shutters are as popular as ever, not just for their ability to manage heat, light, security, and privacy for the home, but also for their elegant, timeless style and low maintenance appeal.

Why choose shutters for your bay windows?

Bay windows can often be difficult to cover. Dressing their odd angles and configurations to showcase all their glory, whilst also trying to fulfil the essential practical duties expected of a window dressing means off-the-shelf solutions are often difficult to find. However, bespoke interior shutters for your bay window will provide the right balance between aesthetics and practicality. They will create a warm and comforting atmosphere that so many people desire from their bay window shutters.

Advantages of wooden shutters for bay windows

Fit any bay window

Bay windows come in many different shapes, sizes and varying angles. We can craft shutters with such precision that your resulting window dressing will not only match your window shape perfectly, but also complement the aesthetics of your home. This includes shutters for curved bay windows and round bay windows.

Achieve privacy and light simultaneously

Bay windows are great for allowing natural light to flood in, but privacy can be hard to capture simultaneously. There is no need to compromise with window shutters. They’re perfect for bay windows in bedrooms or bay windows in your living room.

Boost thermal efficiency

With the general size of bay windows, extra energy leakage and heat loss can occur, especially with older, thinner traditional windows. As a natural product, our hardwood shutters act as another layer of insulation due to their low thermal conductivity, reducing heat loss by up to 61%.

Easy to clean and maintain

A quick wipe over with a damp cloth is all that is required. With bay window shutters there are no heavy curtains to take down or spend a small fortune on getting dry cleaned. They are easy to look after and keep free from dust and allergens.

Tailor to your design scheme

You can tailor the colour and style of your shutters to match your interior décor. You will not have to compromise on practicality either. Our range of shutter materials cover all bases from waterproofing to sunlight protection.

Increase your kerb appeal

Shutters often add value to a property, particularly when placed somewhere highly visible like a street-facing bay window. Victorian bay window shutters are the ideal way to complement and preserve the unique character of your property.

Which shutter style suits bay windows best?

All of our shutter styles can be used to dress bay windows. Full height or tier on tier shutters are a great way of covering the whole window whilst celebrating their grandness. Full height shutters for bay windows can also be designed with a divider-rail. The horizontal divider-rail allows you to operate the slats within each section independently of one another. Tier on tier shutters operate in a similar way, the difference being that you can open or close the top and bottom section independently of one another. Café shutters for bay windows are a great way to make the most of their height, allowing you to preserve your privacy whilst leaving lots of exposed window above the shutter for natural light to flood through.

How much do plantation shutters for bay windows cost?

There is no one-size-fits-all cost for bay window shutters. All the shutters made by us are completely bespoke to match the type of bay window that they’ll be fitted to. We use a special tool to measure the angles to the nearest millimetre, rather than sticking separate frames together. The factors that impact on the price of plantation shutters for bay windows include:

  • The size and shape of the bay window.
  • Your chosen shutter design and function.
  • The shutter material you choose.
  • Your shutter size, finish, and colour.
  • The type of tilt rod chosen and whether it is standard or hidden.

What is the most popular colour for bay window shutters?

Deciding on what shutter colour to go for will always come down to personal choice. The 5 most popular shutter colours requested by our customers are:

In a recent survey we carried out with our customers, we asked ‘if you have/were to have wooden shutters installed in your living room window, would you choose a neutral colour or a bold colour?’. Out of the 556 customers who responded to the question, 99% said they would choose a neutral-coloured blind rather than a bold colour.

When we asked them why they would choose a neutral colour the top three answers were:

  • Neutral colour shutters would allow them to easily change the décor of the room.
  • Neutral colours make the most of natural light to make a room feel brighter and airier.
  • Neutral colours can be used for a range of interior looks and are easy to live with.

Of the 15 people that selected ‘other’ as their answer choice, 6 respondents said they thought having neutral-coloured shutters would make it easier to sell the property in the future if required. The other 9 respondents chose ‘other’ due to design and personal taste preferences.

The 1% of customers that said they would choose a bold shutter colour explained this was because:

  • A bold colour would better match their design scheme.
  • A bold colour would make the shutters into a statement feature.
  • Bold colours make the room look warmer.
